Placed in Picos de Europa, the route named after the Cares River, which leads the way, is one of the most frequented from Caín, León, and Poncebos (Asturias).

It runs between the well-known Picos de Europa, National Park since 1918, formed by majestic peaks, and paths ended by the edge of the mountains themselves. The valleys are full of mystery and legends, things that are preserved in the shepherds and locals’ memory.
The Garganta del Cares, or the Cares Canyon or Corge, runs through a cut made in the Gorge of the Carespara River in order to build the Camarmeña hydroelectric power plant. This route is also a service and maintenance route aimed at the collection and conduction of water to this power plant situated between Camarmeña and Poncebos (both in Asturias), a hydroelectric bound that derives with a reservoir. This project’s promoter was the Electra de Viesgo Society in 1916.

In summer, this route is greatly frequented by the lovers of nature, hiking, and photography, people that enjoy its vast peaks and its fully natural landscapes. A walk through this place is impressive in winter and autumn, times in which the mountains change its greenish colours to yellow and, finally, white. The wildlife of this marvellous place is to be highlighted, formed by a great amount of chamois and goats that greet the visitors making them remember where they are.
The place known as Divina Garganta, or Divine Canyon, is a 12 km long man-made gorge, with a slope of almost 2,000 meters that can be comfortably walked through a path between Caín de Valdeón (León) and Puente Poncebos (Asturias).

The wildlife of this place always comes out to greet the hiker.
