In Burgos, close to the frontier with Álava, the most superb rocky amphitheatre of the Iberian Peninsula can be found. During rainy and snowmelt seasons, Nervión river falls down its 222+ meters waterfall, and when these facts are not present, the waterfall may be found completely dry or with just a thin layer of water.
Salto del Nervión is located near Orduña (Bizkaia,) but Parque Natural del Monte Santiago is located in Burgos, Sierra Salvada, just like most of the kilometers of the routes. This zone can be accessed by car, except for the last two kilometers that need to be done by foot in order to enter the viewpoint. One of the relevant features that we can find is one of the four loberas located in the mountain. These loberas were used for knock out wolfs, shepherds created a system that was able to lead wolfs to a 2 meter well through noises.
Once gone by the lobera, the way branches in two: on the right side, going through Delka río, we get to a Nacedero del Nervión viewpoint that is rarely known but just as astonishing. One of the attractions of valle de Delika is the great number of griffon vultures that can be seen flying over the mountains.
But these are not the only animals that can be found since it is a diverse area. From golden and short-toed eagles, peregrine falcons, Egyptian vultures to wolves, roe deer, wild boars, squirrels, otters, and wildcats. It is mainly an area of migratory birds.
The main route is 6.7 kilometers long and it starts in Casa del Parque, which acts as reception center for visitors. Right beside it, the ruins of Sancti Jacobi de Langriez, a medieval monastery, can be found. In the same place, Fuente de Santiago can be found and it is the perfect example to understand the perplexing karst system that is located in the underground.
Although the favorite option for photography lovers is undoubtedly experiencing Salto del Nervión under the waterfall. This route is quite more difficult since the way is full of rocks and we must walk through the river several times.
