Mercado del Val is a market located in Valladolid, an example of cast-iron architecture. It is located in Val square, besides San Benito Church and it is the city’s oldest market. It is inspired in Les Halles, Paris.
On the current day, it consists of a completely metallic and square-shaped facility of 112 meters high. It was originally constructed with a large central dome but it was removed shortly after, leaving a gable roof with a skylight on each sides.

The original construction, a project by the architect Joaquín Ruiz Sierra, took place from 1878 to 1882 but it had to be stopped several times due to reports informing that it was not being correctly built. The first significant reformation took place in 1900, when the central dome was removed due to issues regarding the building’s stability. It did not went other reformation until it was completely restored in 1982.
In 2013, the market temporarily “moved out” to Plaza del Poniente because the original building was under thorough restoration, which started in 2014 and ended in 2016.
Mercado del Val reinvented itself as the first bioclimatic market in Spain, a pioneer in energy management but without giving up its Parisian and industrial appearance.
A lot of tourists that visit Valladolid do not miss the chance of walking around Mercado del Val for being a traditional market with an excellent location besides Plaza Mayor. Moreover, it holds food stands with fruits, vegetables, meat and fish ad a few bares. The great quality of all their products and the impeccable maintenance are the most highlighted features.
